What is rabeprazole uses? 

Rabeprazole is mainly used for treating certain esophagus as well as stomach problems such as ulcers and acid reflux. Rabeprazole sodium tablet works by decreasing the amount of acid that your stomach makes, thus relieving the different symptoms such as persistent cough, heartburn, and difficulty in swallowing.  

This medication is also used for healing acid damages of the stomach as well as the esophagus. Rabeprazole 20 mg helps to prevent ulcers and also cancer of the esophagus. Therefore, Rabeprazole belongs to the class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors.  

Rabeprazole tablet is mainly used for treating short-term symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux diseases mainly found in adults as well as children who are at least one year old. This medicine is also prescribed by doctors to adults in order to promote healing of duodenal ulcers or erosive esophagitis.  

This medication is also given with an antibiotic in order to avoid duodenal ulcer which occurs by infection with Helicobacter pylori. Therefore, remember that this medicine is not for providing immediate relief from heartburn symptoms.    

What is the dosage of rabeprazole sodium?

If you are using Rabeprazole sodium tablet then take the dose by mouth with or without the food as prescribed by your doctor. This medicine is mainly taken one to two times a day. Without crushing, chewing or splitting the tablet swallow it with water directly.  

If you are using the capsule form of this medicine, then take the medicine at least 30 minutes before your meal, mainly once daily or as directed by your doctor. Don’t swallow the capsule whole, open it and sprinkle the contents onto a small amount of soft food or liquid such as yogurt. Remember that the food that you are using for consuming this medicine should be at or below room temperature.  

Within the 15 minutes of preparation swallow the entire mixture but remember that you should not crush or chew the prepared mixture. The dosage, as well as length of the Rabeprazole 20 mg tablet, is completely based on your medical condition as well as response to the treatment. Therefore, in children, the dosage of rabeprazole sodium depends upon the weight.

If you are taking rabeprazole tablet to treat duodenal ulcers then take it after a meal and if you are taking this medicine for preventing ulcers that are caused by Helicobacter pylori then you need to consume this medicine with food.  

Rabeprazole and domperidone are often given together for the effective treatment of Gastroesophageal reflux disease as well as peptic ulcer disease.  

Therefore, if you find any side effects or your condition persists or worsens, inform your doctor immediately.  

Precautions to be taken during the intake of rabeprazole

Rabeprazole tablets should not be given to children without consulting the doctor as there are certain forms as well as strengths of this medicine which is not good for children younger than 12 years old.  

Don’t stop, start or change the intake of any medicine before you consulting your doctor. 

What are the side effects of rabeprazole? 

Get the medical help if you suffer from severe stomach pain, sudden pain, trouble in moving your back, hip or wrist, diarrhea that is bloody or watery as well as seizure.  

You need to get the assistance of the doctor immediately if you find any of these signs: 

  • Sign of kidney problems like urinating less than usual, swelling, blood in urine and rapid weight gain. 
  • Sign of new or worsening symptoms of lupus such as joint pain, skin rash on cheeks or arms that is worsening in sun exposure. 
  • Sign of low magnesium such as tremors, jerking muscle movements, muscle cramps, cough or choking feeling, dizziness and fast or irregular heart rate.
  • Sign of bleeding like bloody stools, heavy menstrual flow as well as red urine.

Intake of Rabeprazole tablet for the long term can also cause you to develop stomach growth like fundic gland polyps so do talk to your doctor about this.

When is Rabeprazole not recommended?
