What is prochlorperazine uses?  

Prochlorperazine is one of the anti-psychotic medicines that belong to a group of drugs known as phenothiazines. Prochlorperazine generic drug is available in the brand name of Compazine. This medicine is known to work by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain.  

Prochlorperazine tablets are taken by mouth and are mainly used for treating psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. It is also given to treat anxiety as well as control nausea and vomiting.   

Prochlorperazine maleate medication is not recommended for use in children who are younger than two years or children who are going through a surgery.

Do not get up too fast from a lying or sitting position as you might feel dizzy. In order to prevent falls, get up slowly and steady yourself.   

You should not use Prochlorperazine, in case you are allergic to it or recently you have used alcohol, narcotics, sedative or tranquilizer medications. Prochlorperazine Compazine is not safe for use in psychotic conditions that are related to dementia. This medicine can increase the risk of death in older adults suffering from dementia-related conditions. 

Prochlorperazine Tablets is not safe for children who weigh less than 20 pounds. Do talk to your doctor once before you giving Prochlorperazine to a child or teenager who is suffering from flu symptoms, vomiting, fever or diarrhea. This medicine should strictly not be given to a child before or after surgery.  

Compazine medication can lead to serious movement disorder which may not be reversible so avoid taking it for a longer period without consulting your doctor. Remember that the longer you take Prochlorperazine Tablets there are more chances to develop movement disorder. This risk of such kind of side effects is higher in women as well as older adults.  

Before the intake of Prochlorperazine pill make sure that you inform your doctor if you have ever suffered from various health issues such as urination problems, heart disease, blockage in your intestines, glaucoma, breast cancer, low blood pressure, liver disease, adrenal gland tumor, Parkinson's disease, a history of brain tumor or seizures.

Intake of this medicine can make you more sensitive to the sun so try to limit your time in the sun. Also, try to get rid of tanning booths as well as sunlamps. Make use of quality sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outdoors.  

What are the side effects of Prochlorperazine?

Some of the common side effects of Prochlorperazine Tablets are:

  • Blurred vision, drowsiness & dizziness
  • Itching or rashes and sleep problems
  • Missed menstrual periods

You need to stop this medicine and call your doctor if you experience any signs of serious movement disorder like shaking in your arms or legs, uncontrolled muscle movements in your face and any new or unusual muscle movements that you are not able to control.

  • Little or no urinating, trouble in swallowing
  • Feeling restless or agitated
  • Jaundice, fast or slow heart rate
  • Stiffness or muscle spasms in your neck
  • Signs of low white blood cell counts like sudden weakness, fever, skin sores, trouble in breathing and mouth sores
  • Lupus
  • Serious nervous system reactions like high fever, confusion, tremors and feeling like you might pass out.
