Ofloxacin uses

Ofloxacin fights bacteria in the body and is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This medicine is mainly used for treating bacterial infections of the lungs, skin, prostate as well as urinary tract. It is also effective in treating pelvic inflammatory disease, chlamydia and gonorrhea. This medicine should be given only for infections that cannot be treated with a safer antibiotic.  

Ofloxacin for ears is used for treating outer ear infections as well as middle ear infections by stopping the growth of bacteria. Ofloxacin for eyes is helpful in treating bacterial infections of the eye including conjunctivitis also known as pink eye and ulcers of the cornea. This medicine does not work for viral infections like flu and common cold. Using an antibiotic when not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.  

Ofloxacin dosage

This medicine is taken with water and with or without food at the same time each day. When you intake this medicine, remember to drink extra fluids in order to keep your kidneys working properly.  

Even if the symptoms improve quickly, ofloxacin needs to be used for full prescribed length of time. Take this medicine twice a day after every 12 hours. Therefore, the length as well as dosage of treatment depends upon your medical condition and also response to treatment. Ask your doctor about the other products you take.

Ofloxacin side effects

Ofloxacin can often have very serious side effects like tendon problems, effects on your nerves, low blood sugar as well as serious behavior or mood changes.

  • Low blood sugar resulting in sweating, headache, fast heart rate, feeling shaky, nausea as well as dizziness.

You also need to stop using ofloxacin and call your doctor immediately if you have:  

  • Acute pain in your stomach or diarrhea that is watery or bloody. 
  • If you find pounding or fast heartbeats, difficulty in breathing, sudden dizziness or fluttering in your chest. 
  • Little or no urination, weakness in muscles, increase pressure inside the skull which leads to headache, vision problems ringing in your ears as well as pain behind your eyes. 
  • Certain liver problems like loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools or upper stomach pain. 
  • If there is any change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms, then contact your doctor. Though this is not the complete list of possible side effects if you find any other side effects apart from all this contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.


Inform your doctor, if you are allergic to this medicine or other antibiotics or also if you are suffering from other allergies, before taking ofloxacin. Before starting this medication, tell your doctor about your entire medical history especially if you have seizure disorder, kidney disease, joint or tendon problems, blood vessel problems, high blood pressure or even if any genetic conditions. 

Don’t have any vaccinations or immunizations while using this medicine unless your doctor tells you because ofloxacin can cause live bacterial vaccines not to work well.    

This medication can make you more sensitive to the sun so always wear sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors.
