What is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is used to treat or stop various types of infections caused by bacteria. These infections encompass pneumonia; bronchitis; Legionnaires; diphtheria; ear infections; skin infections; venereal disease, and rheumatic fever. Initially, the medicine was marketed by Eli Lilly and Company, and these days it is known as EES (erythromycin ethylsuccinate). The medicine belongs to the group of drugs called acrolide antibiotics.

How should I take Erythromycin?

The intake of the medicine should be made exactly as prescribed by the doctor. This is to avoid smaller or larger or for longer than recommended to obtain maximum benefits.  Normally, the dose prescribed for Erythromycin is to be taken with a glass full of water every 6 hours (four times a day) or every 8 hours (three times a day) for about a week or more.  The liquid medicine (oral suspension) should be shaken well for about 15 seconds and is measured with a dose-measuring spoon before taken.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Missing a dose is really not good as it may affect the treatment procedure. The patient should know when to take dose so that he or she does not skip a dose and thus expect a timely recovery. If a patient forgets to take the recommended dose on the time given then he or she should take one dose to make up for the loss. But this is only required to do when the next dose is not scheduled.  Do not double the dose.

What are the dosage forms and strengths of Erythromycin?

Erythromycin dosage and forms are available in different shapes and sizes. It all depends upon the health care provider which form he decides for you. Depending upon the nature of the bacterial infection you may be advised to take oral delayed release tablet, oral delayed release capsule, and oral tablet, powder for injection, oral suspension, or oral granule for reconstitution.

Before taking the medicine the patient should inform all the medications he or she is already taking so that the doctor can advise you whether Erythromycin is meant for you or not.

Should I use Erythromycin with food or without food?

The intake of Erythromycin can interact with high fat meals, or rich and spicy meals. To get detailed information on it the patient should meet the doctor and know which food items need to be stopped.
