Periactin has been marketed under the generic name Cyproheptadine and is available as Periactin MSD 62 pills. It is the first generation anti-histamine with local anaesthetic and anti-cholinergic properties. The pill is available in the strength of 4 mg and has been marketed by Merck and company Inc. and has been approved by the FDA.
Periactin is used in the treatment of allergic reactions including hay fever;it is also effectively used to treat allergic symptoms such as running nose, watery eyes, sneezing, hives and itching in the nose and eyes. The drug acts by blocking histamines in the body that are produced during allergic reactions.
How to use Periactin:
Periactin pills are consumed orally with or without food exactly as directed by the physician and the usual dosage is 2 to 3 times a day. Liquid form of the medicine is also available and needs to be carefully measured to adjust dosage. It is important to intimate the physician on the progress of health following usage of the drug.
Paediatric use of the drug needs to be dealt carefully and the drug is not prescribed for children below 4 years of age. The drug could react with MAO inhibitors such as phenelzine, furazolidone, selegiline, tranylcypromine etc and should therefore not be combined. The drug is not harmful for an unborn baby but it is not indicated during pregnancy and lactation period.
